Organisational Carbon Footprint Development

The Client

Ingleton Wood, a leading UK property and construction consultancy, has been working with Philosophy (formerly Consciam) to better understand and reduce the environmental impact of its operations and value chain. With growing expectations from clients and frameworks, the company recognised the importance of developing a credible, data-led carbon footprint to use as a basis for an actionable decarbonisation plan.

The Challenge

Ingleton Wood had already taken important steps by measuring its operational carbon emissions, yet wanted to move beyond simple reporting towards a comprehensive, repeatable footprinting process that could inform longer-term reduction planning.

The key challenge was to ensure consistency across multiple offices, extend the scope of measurement to capture more of the company’s value chain impacts, and identify practical actions that would support meaningful progress towards decarbonisation.

The Approach

We’ve supported Ingleton Wood over multiple years to strengthen the accuracy, scope, and usefulness of its carbon data through a collaborative process:

  1. Data Framework and Baseline Development: Starting with a full review of operational boundaries, we helped Ingleton Wood establish a robust baseline across Scopes 1 and 2, alongside key Scope 3 categories such as waste, water, business travel, commuting, and homeworking.
  2. Scope Expansion: For FY25, we extended the footprint to include Purchased Goods & Services — enabling a more complete understanding of supply chain emissions and alignment with best practice reporting standards.
  3. Quality Assurance and Guidance: We provided hands-on support and monthly guidance sessions to ensure data quality, verify assumptions, and upskill the internal team in footprint development. This included practical advice on data sourcing, survey design, and validation checks
  4. Reporting and Insights: A concise carbon footprint report summarised key findings, hotspots, and trends — helping Ingleton Wood to identify priority areas for emission reduction and track year-on-year performance.

The Deliverables

This ongoing collaboration has enabled Ingleton Wood to:

  • Build an internal capability to collect and process carbon data efficiently.
  • Expand the scope of measurement to better reflect total business impacts.
  • Strengthen data confidence through independent QA and transparent reporting.
  • Identify key decarbonisation opportunities to support future target setting and reduction planning.

By embedding robust measurement processes, Ingleton Wood is now better positioned to integrate carbon management into business decisions and client discussions – demonstrating leadership and accountability in the built environment sector.

We have worked with the Philosophy team for a few years now and they have been a great support in developing our carbon footprint and decarbonisation approach. Since establishing our initial Carbon Footprint report in 2016 we’ve worked together to expand our scope, from collecting employee commuting data to evaluating our purchased goods and services. This has allowed us to gain a greater understanding of our business and value chain impact and develop action plans to address and reduce our carbon emissions. The Philosophy team have brought a high level of rigor, challenge assumptions constructively and thoughtfully and maintained a positive, collaborative style.
