About us

Our Story

In 2025 Philosophy was born out of a heartfelt desire unlock the power of business to create positive and sustainable change. Acting as partners and trusted advisors, Philosophy exists to enable business to thrive through taking effective action to align with the needs of people and planet.

After six years of close collaboration on a variety of shared client projects, Fit For Purpose, the strategic sustainability consultancy, and Consciam Ltd, a leading carbon accounting and data agency,  joined forces to create this new advisory business.

We have developed a fresh approach we call thoughtful business, designed to help businesses navigate a complex and ever-shifting sustainability landscape with the confidence that comes from integrity and a clearly defined underlying business philosophy.

Our Team

Phil Clarke (Founder of Consciam) and Sophie Brooks (Founder of Fit for Purpose) are successful sustainability professionals who’ve each worked across corporate responsibility, sustainability and in the environmental and water sectors for more than three decades. In joining forces we are bringing together two complementary and collectively more powerful areas of deep expertise: using environmental and social data, modelling and analysis as a tool to drive change; and excellence in establishing business purpose, strategy development and goal-setting.

Phil Clarke

Phil Clarke

Founding Director

Phil is driven by helping organisations to understand and reduce their environmental & social impacts. He seeks positive outcomes that deliver “more good”, not just “less bad”.

With 34 years consultancy experience and 15 years in the sustainability space, Phil is an expert in measuring carbon and other impacts. Crucially his expertise includes translating potentially dull numbers into meaningful data and insights to drive sustainability strategies, targets and action. “A carbon footprint is just a bunch of numbers, it’s what you do with it that counts” as he often says.

Phil led Capgemini UK’s environment programme, including establishing an ambitious Net Positive target, before founding Consciam (a certified B Corp) in 2015. He has helped many companies to drive real change in their business. Phil lives in Cornwall where he loves to spend time in, on or close to the sea.

Introducing our Advisory Board

The sustainability sector is as broad as it is deep. The issues on which it touches – from climate justice, to supply chain resilience, to circular business and human rights – are varied and profoundly complex. It is vital to us as Founders that as we evolve Philosophy as a business, we ensure we augment our own skills and experiences with a wider set of eyes and minds.

We’re growing rapidly but recognise our limitations in this multi-faceted world. To build an ethical and diverse business, we sought ways to increase representation outside our employee base. We also value listening to and considering our client audience and societal demographics.

The Philosophy Advisory Board will help us stay honest, steer us in the right direction, and provide a broader range of insights and experience.

We’re thrilled with the external advisors we’ve appointed, who have relevant experience in social impact, nature, marketing, NGOs, and governance, as well as unique perspectives and life experiences.

The role of the Board is:

  • To provide input and guidance on key strategic decisions the Board needs to take about its service offering and future strategy
  • To act as an independent sounding board to challenge to help inform and improve that strategy
  • To represent the interests and perspectives of different stakeholders i.e. Nature, Customers, Third Sector, Under-represented Groups, Employees
  • To inform on issues of evolving stakeholder views & expectations
  • To uphold best practices in governance, market positioning and the pursuit of impact
